*KASHRUT ALERTS*

Local:

§ Tully's Coffee Bellaccino bottled coffee drinks have an unauthorized Seattle Vaad logo (Seattle K) on the cardboard box. The bottles have a plain KD on them. None of these products are under the supervision of the Seattle Vaad. This product is sold in WA, OR, ID, MT, AK, & CA.  The Seattle Va’ad does supervise Tully's roasted, unflavored coffee beans, whole and ground.    The organization providing the plain KD on the Tully’s bottled Bellaccinos is not recommended.  Note:  Starbucks bottled Frappachinos bear an acceptable KD because that kashrut organization is recommended.

§ The lowfat vanilla ice cream at Maggie Moo’s on Mercer Island is not under kosher supervision.  All the other ice creams and sorbets are under Va’ad supervision.   Check the posted kosher certificate at the store for the details of what in the store is under supervision.

§ Albertson’s has new breads from the La Brea Bakery.   They are Kosher, Parve, and Pat Yisrael when they have the Va’ad logo on them.

§ At Albertson’s on Mercer Island, the Toufayan Croissants with a Tablet-K, the Joyva Jelly Rings, and the Sicor wine are not recommended.  In general, all Albertson’s products should be checked for a reliable hechsher, even if they are located near other kosher products.

§ The Seattle Va’ad website http://www.seattlevaad.org/KosherSymbols.html contains a current list of recommended, reliable hechsherim that are commonly encountered.  If you have any questions about a hechsher, either on the list or not, please contact the Va’ad at 206-760-0805 or through vaadinfo@seattlevaad.org.  Note: some hechsherim are recommended only for certain products, so please mention the product when you contact the Va’ad with your question.

National:

§ In honor of upcoming Tu B'Shvat  www.kashrut.com/consumer/dried_fruit has a listing of which dried fruits and nuts need certification.  A reminder to everyone about the possible insect infestation in some popular fruits consumed during this time, namely figs and dates. Although plain, unflavored varieties generally are acceptable without hashgacha, there may be a problem with bugs and worms. Those that are sold in bulk are much more likely to be problematic, and although they can be checked for infestation, we do not recommend purchasing figs and dates from this source because of the high likelihood of the presence of worms. Those figs and dated that are packaged under national brand names should be fine.  Nevertheless, a cursory inspection should be done to be certain that there is no infestation.

§  There is another hechsher that looks similar to the Seattle Va’ad logo.  It looks like a torch and is called the “Ner Tamid K”.  It has been seen on Amy’s Kitchen products.  This is not a recommended kosher symbol.

§ Small worms have been found in dry barley bags.  It is recommended that prior to use one looks over the dry barley.

§ From the Kof-K : Zapp's Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips are mistakenly labled Kof-K PARVE. The product is DAIRY. Future labeling will be corrected.

§ Muir Glen Organic Tomato products in a can (not glass jars) with a KSA symbol are recommended.

§ From the OU:  Kashi Go Lean Carmel Peanut Butter Roll Bar, Chocolate Peanut Butter Roll Bar, Chocolate Turtle Roll Bar, Fudge Sundae Roll Bar and Oatmeal Walnut Bar, with the expiration date codes May 30, 2007 through August 30, 2007 mistakenly contain a non-kosher ingredient.  Products with a date code of September 13, 2007 or higher are kosher when bearing the OU symbol.  More info

§ From the OU:  Pringles Minis are not OU certified.

§ You can find a list of recent kashrut alerts at http://www.kosherquest.org or www.kashrut.com.  As always, please consult with your rabbi or the Va’ad if you have any questions about specifics.

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tu B'Shvat- the New Year of Trees( "Fruticas") is here when we renew and celebrate the connection between the People of Israel, the Land of Israel and the Produce of Israel (seven fruits and grains associated with Israel), and to sustenance from the earth in general (other fruits, including shehechiyanu). Enjoy as you note this occasion according to your tradition and practices.

With the approach of Tu B'Shvat, we also note that Pesach is two months away and preparations for it begin to be seen increasingly at home, in the stores, and other community venues. The Va’ad continues to work to ensure that there is increased choice for food and food service, in a quality manner and at an appropriate price.  Information will be coming soon about availability and other considerations.  As we get closer if you have any questions or suggestions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

On another subject, the best way to host and accommodate meshulachim continues to be a challenge.  (The third "installment" on this subject is still in work to comprehensively deal with all the input generated to the previous writings).  In the meantime, it is worthwhile to note that historically, the next few months (from now until after Pesach) is a "prime" time for such visits.  Remember that the mitzvah is clear on the need for acceptance, positive interpersonal interaction, and to providing some financial assistance.  It is also the case that the amount is at your discretion.  If you experience non-acceptable behavior,  please let the office know so that appropriate action can be taken; if you've reached your personal limit, consider asking that visits be cut down or filtered somehow rather than "just saying no" to any visits.  Enough for now, more later.  Tizku LeMitzvot.   – Al Maimon

The Vaad issued 2 certificates to Meshulachim this week.  The previous week, we issued 2 certificates for institutions, 1 for an individual.
